Wouldnt it be better to look out for a new dial? You can spend 300 or more in the restoration but lose all the value in the watch, or take like 500€ in your hand and look out for a dial. I think the second approach is also more satisfying.

you have pics of the watch?

Hi Nico

Thank you for getting in touch. The watch is the transitional Mk4 Sherpa Graph that you correctly identified from E-bay with the NOS hands. I have included a photo of the dial. My hope would be to achieve a better match between the NOS hands and the old dial.

I would greatly appreciate any advice and any suggestions how best to complete this project.

As for locating a dial is it just the usual suspects E-bay and Chrono24 or are there any more specialist sites?

I really think it would be tough to find a replacement dial for this one unfortunately Andrew. I've never seen one come up for sale personally.

Have to say I agree that an original dial will be far more interesting to collectors than a refinished dial. If it bothers you, sell the watch and replace it with one you like better.

Thanks for your input, I’m coming round to the idea of wearing it for a while and then seeing how I feel

I wouldn't even refinish this dial:

Whilst I take your point and agree that these are tool watches and should show their history. A collection of untouched watches that only see the light of day for Instagram photos seems to miss the point as to what these watches were made to do. Ultimately the aesthetic is subjective and I am not sure I would want to live with that much damage on a dial

I totally agree with you here and that dial above is beautiful with its scares and bruises and gives the watch a character and soul!

Here is my MKIII with its original dial:
