So this is interesting, I think, especially if one does not own a Mark III:

It is mentioned in the write-up that the screw back is very tight and they couldn't open up the watch. I surely hope that they did not try hard. ;)

Have a look here:

Just look at that estimate! 800 to 1200 GBP.

Does anyone think that the watch will sell anywhere near the high number?

Now look at this:

Here the estimate is more realistic though still on the low-side.

There are many more Rolex watches, Pateks, Breitlings and Heuers sold than there are Enicars, and the auction houses just do not know how to set the range of relatively rare watches, unsurprisingly.

Good luck to whomever bids on this one!

Cheers,

Joe

I was sound asleep when the auction went off this morning. ;)

The hammer price for the S.G. is certainly a bit over the £1,200 high estimate!

I note that nearly all the other watches and chronographs sold either very near, at, or slightly above the high estimates. The point being that the auction houses generally have an easier time coming up with reasonable valuations for watches that were made in higher quantities where recent turnover is higher.

For some reason, the 765 AVI did not sell. Perhaps there was an issue with it not obvious in the limited photos?

I didn't see that one, I'll have to look.

They did make a bit of a fuss about the S.G. saying how rare it was and that they never see them. I think they had no idea how to price it but a quick Google search would have helped!

I’ve assisted at my first watch auction yesterday (although remotely). It was a mono-brand sale (>200 Zenith pieces, half wrist-watches, half pocket-watches).

My impression coming out of it was that for 80% of the desirable pieces the expert had had no clue what to estimate. Go figure (IIRC): Two NOS Rainbow Flybacks (with boxes) were estimated with a high end <3000 EUR (There were about 25% in fees on top). A “chronomètre de concours” sold at 4 or 5 times the high estimate.

So one of my takeaways yesterday was that, overall, “expert” and “expertise” are terms that seem to be used a bit too widely and lightly…

PS: I have the ”same“ scales bracelet on a Yema Superman “63” re-issue dive watch…
Who copied whom back then?
