So here we are on a gray day in New York.

Waiting for the Missus, I stuck my arm out the window and here you see how the 'blackish' polished steel 'pops' when the light strikes it from the side:

Those hands are perfect and the Super-LumiNova was obviously applied professionally.

Plots on the hour markers fade in a second or two when the UV light source is removed, but the lume on the hands persists as expected.

Looks great. Was all the lume replaced, or just the hands?

I haven't put a Geiger counter on it, but based on the immediate disappearance of any glow after shining a UV light on the watch, the lume plots for the hour markers look to be original. The hands have been done with Super-LumiNova with a tint to match the hour makers.

A few more photos today . . .

One may double-click on the images to blow them up!

This one was taken with filtered sunlight coming in a window to the left. Focus could have been better.

Notice the Pebro "wasserfestes leder" band. It's a very dark gray rally strap originally purchased for the Id.

Here's an interesting lighting effect:

Natural sunlight coming on from the left. The glass is very lightly tinted blue. Warm LED lighting overhead.

As long as I was taking the bracelet off, I thought to realign the case back properly as shown below:

The wave spring seal works well in closing the watch properly.

My Mark III did not come with a wave seal and IIRC, the Id does not have one. I'll have to check as the case back on the Id fits as tightly as does the Ia.

I suspect that all the EPSA cases once had spring seals, but many have been discarded.

I have two other straps to try out and I am still threatening to put up a video or two. ;)

Cheers,

Joe

As the tread starter I can inform you that another of the MK1a:s with connection to Vasa showed up on the Swedish Antique Roadshow the other day!

I have a link to the show below and the watch appear after 37 min but but I think it’s not allowed to watch outside of Sweden?!🤷🏼‍♂️
Antique Rod Show Sweden

The program was shot in Sweden early of the summer 2021 and the watch was estimated by an “expert” in the show to bring like €100k in an auction!🤷🏼‍♂️

That value was set together with some medallions and the watch alone was estimated to €80k!
Very remarkable evaluation since Bukowskis just a month before this event sold a similar Vasa MK1a for €180k including commissions!

Here are some pics that I got from @JimJupiter.

The watch seems to be in a great condition and is currently owned by the son of the first owner.

The owner told me that the auctioneer didn’t t believed the result and said this was market pushing by two dealers.

Didn’t checked. If it’s the same I saw last week, than you need a VPN outside Sweden to watch it.

The auctioneer is partly correct.

Two bidders with fixed high bids pushed the price up to the upper end or limits of what an enthusiast would pay at most - or nearly most.

That said, I am of two minds on this issue.

Why a screw-back Jochen Rindt Autavia is worth twice as much as what I paid for a more beautiful (objectivity alert!) and more rare watch . . . and why a garden variety Daytona could be worth four times or as much as twenty-five times as much is . . . not rational.

In the words of the late Yul Brynner in The King and I: "It's a puzzlement!"

But there is very little about watch collecting that is rational anyway. ;)

That said: I'd like to see the price for the above watch exceed expectations, even though my motivation may be a bit suspect. ;)

Wearing it today, BTW ;)

Sorry . . .

My bad.

I thought that, since the show was current, and since two bidders were mentioned, we were discussing the more recent sale.

I think my comments are still valid though! :)

"The program was shot in Sweden early of the summer 2021 . . . "

That's what I missed.

These shows are often shot long before we see them.
